    Chittaranjan Das, popularly known as Deshbandhu (Friend of the Nation), was a prominent Indian freedom fighter, lawyer, and political leader during the early 20th century. He was born on November 5, 1870, in the village of Telirbagh, in Bengal, British India. Chittaranjan Das played a crucial role in the Indian independence movement and was one of the key figures in the Indian National Congress.

    Das hailed from a well-educated and affluent family. He received his early education in the village school and later attended the University of Calcutta. He went on to study law at the prestigious University College London and was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple. Upon his return to India, he started his legal practice in Calcutta.

    In the early years of his career, Chittaranjan pursued law with great success, earning a reputation as a brilliant lawyer known for his integrity and commitment to justice. However, his passion for social justice and desire to free his country from British colonial rule soon led him to immerse himself in the nationalist movement.

    Chittaranjan became closely associated with other prominent leaders of the time, such as Dadabhai Naoroji, Lala Lajpat Rai, and Bal Gangadhar Tilak. He played a significant role in shaping the political landscape of India through his involvement in various nationalist activities and his powerful oratory skills, which earned him a large following.

    In 1917, Chittaranjan was elected as the President of the Indian National Congress at the Calcutta session. His presidency marked a turning point in the Congress’s approach towards the freedom struggle. Das advocated for more assertive methods of protest and self-reliance, emphasizing the importance of Swaraj or self-rule.

    Apart from his political activities, Chittaranjan was also a prolific writer and thinker. He wrote extensively on a wide range of issues, including politics, society, and culture. His writings and speeches inspired many Indians to join the freedom movement and fight for independence.

    One of the defining moments of Chittaranjan life was his participation in the Non-Cooperation Movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920.
